Motorcycle Tire Studs – FAQ

How do I choose the right tire stud size?

Choose the stud length based on your tire tread depth. 👉 Rule: The stud shank should be 2mm shorter than your lug height.

  • Front Tires → Precision steering (#174)

  • Rear Tires (450cc+) → Aggressive racing (#180R)

  • Small Bikes / Trail → All-around grip (#170 / #180)

How many tire studs do I need?

The count depends on your tire size and desired grip level. 👉 Standard Setup:

  • Front Tire: 100 – 120 studs

  • Rear Tire: 150 – 180 studs

  • Pit Bikes: 80 – 100 studs per tire

Can I install tire studs myself?

Yes. No professional tire shop needed. 👉 Requirements:

  • Tools: Standard cordless drill + Kavonix Tool Bit.

  • Time: ~20 minutes per tire.

  • Tip: Do not over-tighten; stop when the head is flush with the rubber.

Will tire studs damage my tires?

Only if the stud is too long for your tire.
👉 Safe Use:

  • Proper Fit: Carcass remains sealed and airtight.

  • Removable: Can be unscrewed for summer storage.

  • Note: Best used on true off-road knobby tires with deep lugs.

Can I ride on regular roads with tire studs?

Tire studs are designed for ice, snow, and off-road use only.

⚠️ Riding on dry pavement may reduce performance and cause faster wear.
